The Course
Get to Know Us
This Lettercarving Intensive Workshop will offer a comprehensive course for beginners that will encompass learning to select, prepare and understand wood, how to choose your carving tools and which to use for which purposes, painting, finishing, and displaying.
What you'll do
Every Tuesday for five weeks the course will cover structured teaching followed by hands-on practice. You'll work through the fundamentals of lettercarving understanding wood grain, selecting appropriate timbers, learning to hold and control a chisel before moving into your own project.
By the end of five weeks, you should have developed the drawing, carving, painting and finishing skills necessary to create a finished monogram or similar carving, roughly 20 cm by 20 cms.
Who it's for
Open to beginners. No prior carving experience is needed.

What's included

All instruction and materials which includes wood, sandpaper, paints, paintbrushes, and masks.

A set of carving tools will be provided on loan, but may also be purchased. (you're welcome to bring your own)

Tim Brookes
Tim Brookes is the founder of the Endangered Alphabets Project.
His carvings, mostly of endangered minority writing, have been exhibited at, among other places, the Barbican Centre, the Bodleian Library, West Den Haag in the Netherlands, Mundolingua in Paris, and at Harvard, Yale, Oxford, Cambridge, the Smithsonian Institution and the Library of Congress.
