LITTLE HANDS CHILDREN'S PROGRAMME
Heritage crafts for
curious hands.
Our Little Hands program introduces young children to heritage crafts skills like block‑printing, weaving, natural dyeing and book‑binding, the skills that are rapidly disappearing or forgotten.
Rather than messy play, these are hands‑on cultural experiences where every child leaves with a meaningful object and a story about its origins.

OUR SESSIONS

Ages 2 - 4,
parent & child
In our Tiny Makers sessions we keep things simple. We begin with quick games that build visual memory and fine motor control before moving into a simple project together. One week you might make a little clay tile and press your own patterns into it; another you’ll paint with homemade dyes or stitch felt shapes. These sessions are short and playful, giving you and your child space to explore textures, colours and shapes side by side.

Ages 3 - 5,
parent & child
Our Junior Makers classes encourages curiosity. Children create their own mini‑books, weave on cardboard looms and experiment with natural dyes and build simple sculptures. Each session builds on the last so you can see your child's skills grow, and every week introduces a new material or technique.

Ages 5 - 8
After School
In Craft Club we begin with a clay tile project to get them thinking about modelling, perspective and design. Over the weeks we explore acrylics on board, watercolour washes, ink drawings, chalk and oil pastels, papier mâché forms and even a bit of metal tooling. Each class begins with a starter exercise that strengthens visual memory, hand‑eye co‑ordination and colour awareness.

Ages 8 - 11
Home Ed
Designed for home‑educated children who crave deeper, project‑based learning. Over 90 minutes we cover the story of each craft and art inspired by a specific artist, learning how to build up layers and work confidently in colour. From there we move through a lively mix of media: watercolours, inks, pastels, clay and papier mâché. They’ll have the chance to collaborate with their peers and express their own unique visions through their artwork.
WHAT MAKES US DIFFERENT
Little Hands is not about quick crafts. We are the only children’s program in Cambridge built around the Heritage Endangered Crafts. Our sessions:
-
Celebrate endangered crafts
Kids learn the history and environmental significance of techniques like creating natural dyes, block printing, and book‑binding. -
Use sustainable materials
We source natural dyes, recycled fabrics and local clay. -
Build progression
Each term focuses on a craft and skills build week by week; returning children work towards a “Heritage Maker” badge. -
Include parents when they want
Parents are welcome to co‑create in our session and can enjoy a complimentary tea/coffee when the children craft. -
Keep class sizes small
Maximum ten children per session ensures attentive guidance.
